Haharap si Education Secretary Sonny Angara sa Miyerkules, Agosto 7, sa Commission on Appointments (CA) kaugnay ng pagkakatalaga sa kanya bilang kalihim ng Department of Education (DepEd), kapalit ni Vice President Sara Duterte.
Kumpiyansa si Commission on Appointments (CA) Assistant Minority Leader at Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel na magiging “smooth sailing” at “trouble-free” ang deliberasyon ng CA sa pagtatalaga kay Angara dahil kuwalipikado ang dating senador na pamunuan ang DepEd.
“We expect Secretary Angara’s trouble-free confirmation. He is widely recognized to be immensely qualified for the job. So this is not just about according courtesy to a former member of the House of Representatives and the Senate,” pahayag ni Pimentel.
Dagdag pa ni Pimentel, ang mga miyembro ng CA “will likely ask Secretary Angara about his roadmap to bring up the test scores of Filipino students in global assessments.”
Ibinaba ang appointment para kay Sec. Angara matapos lumabas sa ulat ng Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) noong Hunyo na ang mga Pilipinong estudyante ay pumapangalawa sa may pinakamababang marka sa creative thinking mula sa 64 na bansa.
Kilalang advocate ng pagpapabuti ng edukasyon sa bansa, isa si Angara sa mga pangunahing may-akda ng Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, Universal Kindergarten Law, Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 , at Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act.
May awtoridad ang CA, na binubuo ng 12 miyembro bawat isa mula sa Kapulungan ng Kamara at Senado, kung saan ang Senate President ang ex-efficio presiding officer, na tanggihan ang mga political appointment ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Sa ilalim ng umiiral na mga panuntunan, ang mga appointees na hindi magtatagumpay na makuha ang pahintulot ng CA sa adjournment ay ituturing na na-bypass.
