Kinumpiska ng mga tauhan ng Bureau of Customs (BOC) at Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ang malaking bulto ng imported rice na nagkakahalaga ng P500 milyon sa isang warehouse sa Balagtas, Bulacan, noong Huwebes, Agosto 24.
Ayon kay Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) Director Verne Enciso, nadiskubre nila ang 202,000 sako ng smuggled rice na galing Vietnam, Cambodia at Thailand, sa isang imbakan sa Intercity Industrial Complex sa San Juan, Balagtas, Bulacan.
Ang mga nasamsam na bigas ay iprinisinta ni BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio kay House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Rep. Erwin Tulfo, Rep. Wilfredo Enverga, at Rep. Ambrosio Cruz Jr.
“I have ordered the owners of these warehouses to present the necessary documents that will support its rice importation, as well as the amount of rice they have been keeping in these warehouses,” pahayag ni Rubio.
“Only after the LOA (Letter of Authority) were acknowledged by the warehouse representatives did the team proceed to inspect the storage, where they found hundreds of thousands of sacks of rice grain we suspect to be lacking the necessary importation documents,” dagdag ni Rubio.
Ikinandado rin ng Customs authorities ang warehouse bago magsagawa ng imbentaryo sa mga smuggled rice at kapag nabigo ang mga importers na magpakita ng mga supporting documents na magpapatunay na nabayaran ang tamang buwis para sa mga nasabing produkto ay tuluyan itong kukumpiskahin ng gobyerno.
