Nagpulong ang Department of Justice (DOJ) at Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) hinggil sa posibilidad na paghahain ng kaso laban sa China dahil sa pagwasak sa coral reef sa West Philippine Sea, partikular sa Shabina (Escoda) Shoal.
“This is so we can discuss the cases that may be filed in relation to the violations of the environmental laws in the West Philippine Sea. View this as our responsibility to the world to take a hand in matters where environmental destruction is being done,” ani Justice Secretary Jose Crispin Remulla sa media noong Biyernes, Setyembre 22, hinggil sa naging pagpupulong nila ni Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra.
“Whether or not it is our territory but it is within our vicinity, it already gives us a moral responsibility to pursue the destruction of the environment as a task for the good of humanity,” bigay-diin ng DOJ secretary.
Naunang natuklasan ng covert mission na isinagawa ng Philippine Coast Guard kamakailan ang basag na mga corals sa pinakailalim ng karagatan sa Shabina Shoal. Hinala ng Coast Guard, sinadya ang naturang pagsira sa corals.
Samantala, ayon kay SolGen Guevarra, pinag-aaralan na ng kanyang opisina ang hinggil sa posibleng isampang kaso laban sa China sa Permanent Court of Arbitration sa The Hague.
