A female student of the University of the Philippines Diliman was sexually assaulted on campus on Saturday evening, July 1. The victim, whose identity is being concealed, is currently receiving medical care. The suspect is still at large.
CHED Chairperson Prospero “Popoy” de Vera confirmed the assault in a statement on Monday morning, July 3. He said that the UP administration has been asked to extend all possible assistance to the victim and her family. He also called on the university to review its security and safety policies in order to make the campus safer.
UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Vistan II said in a separate statement that more roving personnel are being assigned to patrol the campus following the assault. He urged students to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the university police.
The assault has sparked outrage among UP students and alumni. They have called for increased security on campus and for the university to take stronger measures to prevent sexual violence.
