Ayon sa report ng United Nations special rapporteur, hindi pa sapat ang human rights efforts ng administrasyon ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. upang makabuo ng “meaningful difference” sa freedom of expression sa bansa.
“(The Marcos administration’s human rights efforts are) not enough to make a meaningful difference to the state of freedom of expression,” saad sa report ng United Nations special rapporteur.
Sinabi naman ni UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression Irene Khan na kailangan pang magsagawa ng mas maraming “fundamental and sustained reforms” upang matugunan ang deep-rooted human rights problems sa bansa kung saan karamihan ay may kinalaman sa freedom of expression.
Samantala, ilang buwan bago bumisita ang UN official sa Pilipinas noong 2024 ay nagkaroon ng positibong human rights development sa bansa tulad ng paglaya ni Mamamayang Liberal Rep.-elect Leila de Lima noong Nobyembre 2023 matapos makulong ng halos pitong taon dahil sa drvg-related charges.
“In contrast to former president Rodrigo Duterte and his officials who had publicly disparaged and threatened his critics, media workers and civil society actors, the current administration has adopted a more open and tolerant approach,” saad ni Khan.
